PS3 Adds New DRM Protection To Combat Movie Pirates

Examiner reports that downloading the latest 3.41 PS3 firmware also installs Sony’s newest DRM protection technology dubbed “Cinavia”.

This is an effort to prevent pirated movies being played on PS3s.

According to the official site Cinavia works in a way that it compares the “source of the audio to the format in which a movie was released, and if the watermarked audio source detects a difference, the movie will either be mute or not work at all.”

Speaking with NowGamer, the Bungie described how their past experiences allowed them to make Reach “the best possible game.”

“Ten years ago we had a very small team. I think Halo shipped with about 40 people on the team and it very much still had that ‘guys in a basement’ feel, just trying to wheel out a game and make it the best we could,” said Jarrard. “The great part is that most of the same people are still with us today at the top and we still maintain that core philosophy of making great universes and the kind of games we want to play. That philosophy still drives our studio today.

“More than anything I think we’ve learned how to grow, as well as efficiencies and production, as well as learning how to plan better. You know, everyone’s heard the horror story of Halo 2’s development and how we had to go right through, starting from scratch and basically not having a plan in action.

“Going into our next decade we can look back and use Halo as a great road map and use that as an awesome framework, a real plan that actually maps out our new universe, our new experiences and the types of stories we plan to share with our fans for ten more solid years.”

Designer Niles Sankey made known Reach ended up with a lot more than was originally planned, and on top of it, the developmental process was “the smoothest” ever for the firm.

“I think contradictory to Halo 2, Halo: Reach was probably the smoothest game we’ve ever developed,” he said. “Not only did we not really cut a whole lot from the original plan, we ended up doing a lot more than we set out to do.

“So our past experiences allowed us to make Reach the best possible game and beyond that, the future’s very bright.”

Halo: Reach is scheduled to release in September 14 2010 (USA) only on Xbox 360.

Metro 2033 Announces Ranger Pack DLC, PC Gamers Get It For Free

4A has announced via Twitter the Ranger Pack for Metro 2033 will arrive on August 3 for PC and Xbox 360.

The DLC adds new weapons, Achievements, and reduced ammo with all weapons and attacks doling out more damage – for you and your enemies.

Ranger Hardcore has also had the HUD removed, and the new weapons are the Heavy Automatic Shotgun, and the Volt Driver.

The DLC will be free on Steam, and 240 MSP ($3) on Xbox 360.

EA has announced that gamers buying the limited edition of Medal of Honor will get a special voucher redeemable for a Battlefield 3 beta invite.

The MOH LE features special content out-of-the-box including the MP-7, a weapon utilized by real-world Tier 1 Operators in the field, which is considered a light weight weapon with a high rate of fire with the ability to penetrate body armor. It handles like a pistol, yet allows targets to be engaged like a rifle.

The Limited Edition also includes camouflage, and two shotguns with custom slugs which are ideal for close-range fights.

The PS3 version of the Limited Edition also includes the classic, Medal of Honor Frontline completely remastered in HD just like the regular retail version.

Medal of Honor launches on October 12 2010 (USA) and October 15 2010 (EU) for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

Sega Q1 2010 Results, Makes $80.8M Profit

You read that right.

In the first quearter of 2010, Sega reported a 7 billion yen ($80.8 million) profit for the period that ended on June 30. During the same quarter last year, Sega reported a loss of 10.3 billion yen ($118.9 million).

Sales rise 51% year-on-year to 91.3 billion yen ($1.05 billion).

Alpha Protocol, which was less well received by critics, sold a total of 700K units globally. Iron Man 2, meanwhile, sold 1.12 million copies worldwide.

Total game sales broke down as follows: 1.68 million games in the US, 1.33 million in Europe, and a mere 270K copies in Japan and other regions.

CNN Reviews Kinect: Impressive But Then There’s The Cost

CNN has reviewed Microsoft’s Kinect and has found it impressive.

CNN particularly praised Dance Central and our Shape: Fitness Evolved and described the former as “the closest you can get to an actual dance class without having to step inside a studio.”

However, there is the issue of price, thinking the $149.99 price point will put many gamers off.

While Kinect looks extremely promising, I’m still concerned about the price.

For [the price], customers can buy an entire game system: a new Xbox 360 Arcade Spring Bundle, which comes with two games, or for $129, a used Wii from Gamestop.

Strange. For a product that’s being marketed as a device that’s supposed to reduce barriers of entry, the $150 tag seems downright antithetical to that mission.

Because of that, I don’t expect Kinect will be a blockbuster out of the gate.

The review goes on to state that those with the “extra cash shouldn’t let the price stop them from trying out the next generation of gaming”, but at the same time, “the question remains whether Xbox 360 owners will bite”.

Kinect launches on the US on November 4 2010.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Hardened And Prestige Editions Spotted

IGN reports that they spotted US online retailer Buy.com listed Hardened and Prestige editions of Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Nothing has been officially confirmed and the listing has since been pulled offline.

But it’s a no-brainer, considering how Modern Warfare 2’s special editions sold like hot-cakes.

PS3 Outsold Xbox 360 By 28% In Last 12 Months

VG247 reports that PlayStation 3 outsold Xbox 360 by 4 million units in the 12 months ending June 30, by far the most significant lead Sony has placed over Microsoft since it launched PS3 in 2006.

Microsoft reported last week that it had sold 10.3 million consoles in its last financial year, which ended June 30. Sony confirmed yesterday that it sold 14.3 million PlayStation 3s in the same period, pushing the machine’s total sales to 38.1 million; the gap between the two consoles now stands at a slender 3.6 million units.

Sony boosted PS3 sales over the 2009 Christmas period with the introduction of Slim and a general price cut.

The figures mark a significant reversal in fortunes for the two consoles: in the preceding 12 months, 360 beat out PS3 by 11.1 million to 9.6 million units.

PS3 Firmware 3.41 Update Causing Problems To HDD Upgraders

Many PS3 owners are experiencing problems when upgrading their HDD to the latest 3.41 firmware.

According to Examiner, the problems being reports are the following: PS3 owners are unable to update their system to firmware 3.41, HDD upgrades aren’t being allowed, systems are crashing, and after installing a new HDD the system isn’t fully downloading the file and then prompts users with a message stating ‘no applicable data found’.

Sony has issued a statement regarding such problems:

“We apologize for any inconvenience you are experiencing with upgrading Internal Hard Disc Drive (for PlayStation®3) on your PlayStation(R)3 computer entertainment system. The information available to our Consumer Services Department does not suggest that this is a problem PlayStation(R) owners are likely to experience when upgrading the HDD with 3.41update. Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) strongly supports the quality of its products and backs them with full confidence.

We ask that you update the previous HDD first to see if the update will go through. Then update from the thumb drive that is formatted in FAT 32 and has the 3.41 update downloaded.”

Ubisoft Will Be Offering 3D “In Most Of Our AAA Titles”

Speaking with MCV, Ubisoft’s UK managing director Rob Cooper has said that most triple A titles from the company will have 3D.

“I do believe that Avatar allowed us just a little bit of advantage in terms of experience with how this market will work,” he said.

“We are working to offer the possibility of 3D on most of our upcoming triple-A titles, as we’d like to ensure that we are there for those consumers that begin putting new 3D enabled televisions in their homes.”

Battlefield 1943 PC Release Date Still Unconfirmed, EA Refunds Pre-Orders

This may get you worried.

EA has still not released an exact release date for the PC version of Battlefield 1943, the download-only game that released on PS3 and Xbox 360.

Although EA took pre-orders for the PC version, Examiner says that they are issuing refunds with “no questions asked”.

Speaking to VG247, EA reps told: “All pre-orders can be canceled with refund at anytime and we do not have any further information at this time about a release date for the PC version of Battlefield 1943.”

The newest Dragon Age DLC, dubbed Golems of Amgarrak has you going underground to save a missing dwarven expedition, which was searching for “ancient secrets for creating monstrous constructs”.

The DLC will sell for $5.

“You have come to Orzammar at the request of Jerrik Dace. Jerrik’s brother led an expedition into the Deep Roads to find Amgarrak and the long-lost secrets of golem construction,” BioWare senior designer Rob Bartel told MMORPG.

“The rediscovery of such a method would bring great wealth, power and prestige to House Dace but the expedition has not returned and is now feared lost.

“Jerrik, along with his trusty bronto, Snug, will be joining you in the search for his missing brother. You will find other unexpected companions as you continue on the journey and will need all the help that you can get.

“We want to emphasize that the Golems of Amgarrak is a very challenging quest and not for the faint of heart, particularly when played on Hard or Nightmare difficulty. As for the secret horrors at which the trailer hints, we’ll leave that for only our bravest of players to discover.”

Golems of Amgarrak will release on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 August 10 2010.
