World’s 1st PS3 Hack (And This Time It’s Real)

We reported that pirates had hacked the PS3, allowing copied versions of Killzone 2, Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) 2008 and Burnout Paradise to be played. But users later said that the hack wasn’t working.

But now there is one which does, and the source code is out there to prove it.

iPhone hacker George “Hotz” has finally hacked the PS3.

Speaking to BBC news and The Register, George Hotz said:

“It’s supposed to be unhackable – but nothing is unhackable.

I can now do whatever I want with the [PS3]. It’s like I’ve got an awesome new power – I’m just not sure how to wield it.”

So what exactly is that awesome power? Without the techno-mumbo-jumbo, the PS3 has built in security to prevent it from being hacked. Hotz has managed to remove it, inserting his own code into the system.

It is not yet possible to play copied PS3 games on it.

First of all, all PS3 games are decrypted with a special key, and the key itself has not been unencrypted, making all copied PS3 games useless.

Sony said it was “investigating the report” and would “clarify the situation” when it had more information. However, given time, other hackers are sure to work on the code and we can certainly expect more development on this.
