Sony: PSN Not Yet Profitable, Will Be Soon In Fiscal 2011

We’re guessing it’s really tough to make money on something that’s essential free. Sony boss Kazuo Hirai has said that the PSN is yet to be profitable but he predicts the next fiscal year 2011 to take PSN into the black.

According to the report, PSN sales nearly doubled in the closing fiscal year, reaching 36 billion yen. Sony predicts this to reach 300 billion yen in three years time.

It’s no surprise that Sony’s premium, subscription based PlayStation Plus will be the driving factor for PSN turning over a profit. Sony has also been monetizing the service in other ways as well, such as the extensive advertising partnerships featured in its original video programming.
