You’re So Wrong If You Think Resident Evil Is Dying Off

If you’re thinking that the Resident Evil series is going the way of the dinosaurs, then you’re plain wrong.

Yes, the fundamental gameplay of the Resident Evil series has changed with Resident Evil 4, going from survival-horror to survival-horror action. And yes, many (myself included) do miss the nostalgic days of the original Resident Evil, where the feeling of dread, slow paced action and the constant threat of running out of ammo was a blast on the PlayStation.

But that’s evolution (for better or for worse) and not extinction. In order to survive in this generation of fast paced western shooters like Gears, Halo, etc. Capcom had to reinvent itself. And the result? Resident Evil 5 sold over 5 million copies worldwide and is the best selling game in the series history. [Source] Resident Evil 5 also gained rave reviews, scoring an average of 86 on MetaCritic. And with the upcoming Resident Evil 5 DLC, things will get even better.

Resident Evil 5 Chris and Sheva

Resident Evil Titles Total Sales
Resident Evil 5 5.25 million
Resident Evil 4 4.80 million
Resident Evil 1 5.05 million
Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles (Wii) 1.32 million
Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles (Wii) 0.26 million

Resident Evil 5 is the best selling title of the series, racking up 5.25 million sales worldwide.

Resident Evil Sales History

But yes, those who were introduced into the wonderful universe of Resident Evil with RE 4 or 5 will never know and understand the feeling of the original RE. However, Capcom’s Resident Evil Wii remakes (which featured slow paced action), the Umbrella Chronicles and Darkside Chronicles sold well at 1.58m combined. And that is considering the Wii is a casual friendly console where others such as Dead Space Extraction has failed.

So, if you’re thinking the Resident Evil series is dying off, you would be totally wrong. It might come to an individual’s own preference but 5 million sales is nothing to scoff at. What about the next Resident Evil? It will be interesting to see a remake of the original Resident Evil in glorious hi-def. 😀

  1. While im a big fan of all things RE…And I do mean all things even the awful movies. Your facts and figures are skewed. For example RE4 sold 6.46 million..You seem to be selectively forgetting it was released on the wii…further more Darkside chronicles has been a massive failure and Capcom is none too happy and has been vocal about more or less dropping dev for the wii at least on hardcore games if not completely. You can slice the figures in many ways… And while I dont agree with the article that you are combating I dont think your interpretation or you counter argument is very compelling. The RE series has to truly reinvent its self rather then re-releasing more or less the same game with more polished graphics and co-op.

Ah nice point there. Yes, I didn’t include Wii sales figure for RE4. My only reason for including Darkside & Umbrella chronicles on the Wii is to show that the older RE gamestyle can still be successful. I also didn’t include PC sales for lack of concrete data. Even then many would argue that RE 4 lost touch with its “roots”. But it went on to sell a great number of copies. And I totally agree that RE needs to do new stuff, “in order to survive in this generation of fast paced western shooters like Gears, Halo, etc. Capcom had to reinvent itself.”

My main point was that reinventing the RE series hasn’t killed it off (as that article suggests), rather the opposite.

  3. I’ve played almost all the RE games exept those two games which were released on wii.cus,i don’t have a wii.so,i didn’t get the chance to play them !
in my opinion, the best game i’ve played in the series is RE4 !

  4. @sng425

The Wii one is good fun since you have to aim and shoot. Other than that I really loved RE5 on the PC.

  5. @The Gaming Wiz/Mushfiqur Rahman

i am also playing RE5 on my pc.i haven’t finished it yet !

  6. @sng425

Then you should finish it. 😉 You can plug in your 360 controller on your PC. If you have a wireless 360 controller, you’ll need a 360 gaming receiver for your PC.

  8. @sng425

  9. @The Gaming Wiz/Mushfiqur Rahman

thnx 4 the info.btw….do you have any idea when RE 5 dlc pack is gonna release?
in which platform it will be available?

  10. @sng425

If you’re on the PC, tough luck. RE5 Lost in Nightmares will be coming out a on February 17, 2010 Xbox 360 and February 18 for the PlayStation Network. Desperate Escape will be coming to the Xbox 360 on March 4, 2010 and March 5 on the PlayStation Network.

Seems Capcom is messing with us PC gamers. 😡 😈 They have no plans to release this on the PC yet, particularly because most DLCs sell better on consoles anyway.

Do i need microsoft points to download those dlc from xbox live?will it be available on disks?(e.g gta lost & damned & gta ballad of gay tony)

  12. @sng425

There is talks of a Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition which will have these DLC. Otherwise, yes you need MS points to download them off Xbox Live
