Heavy Rain Sells 1.5M Units, “Success Shows Industry Ready For New Ideas”

Heavy Rain has already sold 1.5 million copies since its launch late last year.

Heavy Rain writer and director David Cage has cited the astounding reviews, currently at 90 based over 500 reviews, as the game’s big factor for success.

David Cage has told an audience at the Games Developers Conference in Cologne, the studio didn’t expect the game to be successful.

The fact people accepted his game, according to Cage, shows “the market is ready for new paradigms.”

“I think the industry is ready for new ideas,” he said. ”Games are today based on violent actions, they are defined by what you see and what you destroy. You always do the same things whether you drive or shoot or jump on platforms.

“They are based on the same rules [that have existed] for 25 years.”

Cage went on to say, “the majority of today’s games are based on these principals and that few games try to explore the wide range of emotions out there.”

He was also of the opinion, all action style games are “are pretty much the same things, and this [violence] targets a young audience.”

While he admits this is not necessarily a problem, he does say with action games, “you lose out on all the emotions”,” to which he adds: “What do you learn, what do you feel?”

“Games should be art and not toys, if you are uncomfortable with the word ‘art’, then ‘entertainment’ is fine.

“Toys are disposable, art is poignant,”Cage concluded.
