PS3 Adds New DRM Protection To Combat Movie Pirates

Examiner reports that downloading the latest 3.41 PS3 firmware also installs Sony’s newest DRM protection technology dubbed “Cinavia”.

This is an effort to prevent pirated movies being played on PS3s.

According to the official site Cinavia works in a way that it compares the “source of the audio to the format in which a movie was released, and if the watermarked audio source detects a difference, the movie will either be mute or not work at all.”

Its a good move from sony. But this update is also said to be causing some hard drive upgrade problems.

  2. @Rabbi

Yup, as you can read here @ http://www.gamersworldbd.com/2010/07/ps3-firmware-3-41-update-causing-problems-to-hdd-upgraders.html

I’ve not yet upgraded to the latest firmware (yeah I burned through my 20GB limit again!) but will do so soon. I won’t be facing any problems hopefully as I’ll do it online and not from the HDD.

  3. @The Gaming Wiz

Me too.Its been a while that these WiMAX providers aren’t giving any new offers or breaking those so called limit.Hope that limit barge gets taken out and i think they are readying some offer for the upcoming eid or something.Bro,dont forget to use a backup power using ups or somehting related cuz if the electricity goes out during ur installation of firmware ur ps3 may be bricked so watch out (u know this but its a quick reminder if u forget it in anyway).I didnt upgrade either my firmware is 3.3 @ the moment.Sorry i didnt see that article u posted before but as i read about a engadget post before making way to this post i said that.

  4. @The Gaming Wiz/Mushfiqur Rahman & Rabbi

I also haven’t upgraded the new firmware yet, My current firmware is 3.21 which was released back in April…

  5. @Rabbi

Hey bro, thanks for the heads up. In fact I have my PS3 connected to a UPS and bro let me tell you – it has saved me countless boss battles and having to restart tedious sequences. But while updating the Xbox 360 the electricity went out. But I was lucky, it kept updating just where it left off.

    @sng425

I’ve just updated to 3.41 with no problems via online. It took about 10-15 minutes.

  6. @The Gaming Wiz

The feature of xbox 360 is great that it has support to resume firmware in case of any power failures πŸ˜›
    And nice speeds btw…..

  8. @Rabbi

I also have my both Xbox 360 and PS3 connected to a UPS so that I can get uninterrupted power suply in case if the electricity goes off. Anyway, Thanks for the heads up.

    @The Gaming Wiz/Mushfiqur Rahman

Its good to hear that you’ve already updated your PS3 firmware without any hassle. But it looks like I’ve got stuck, I can’t update the firmware via online due to that stupid old ISP problem of mine. And now I heard that the the new firmware is causing problems if you update it through the HDD. Looks like I’ll have to download it through my PC and then transfer the data to a USB flash drive and update the firmware through it.

  9. @sng425

good to know.Cuz its unthinkable of those consoles to give a prolonged service without this kinds of precautions in our country. This problems arent getting fixed but they are getting worse.I dont know what will happen to new breed of gamers in our country after 10years from now πŸ™„ And nice to know u have got ur firmware updated.I barely touch my ps3 but when i do i will update it as well.

  10. *sorry i thought u updated it πŸ˜† didnt read it carefully cuz m kinda tedious now.Hope u will update it successfully.

  11. @Rabbi

“its unthinkable of those consoles to give a prolonged service without this kinds of precautions in our country. This problems arent getting fixed but they are getting worse.I dont know what will happen to new breed of gamers in our country after 10years from now ”

Yeah, You’re right, bro. Ain’t this things are a common problem for every gamer in our country? πŸ‘Ώ We have to use precautions like this to prevent any damage to our consoles and to keep them safe.

“The feature of xbox 360 is great that it has support to resume firmware in case of any power failures”

Yeah, And then it has the infamous “rrod”(Red ring of death) too !

“while updating the Xbox 360 the electricity went out. But I was lucky, it kept updating just where it left off.” – 😯

Bro, As far as I know, The new (version 3.0) dashboard update is going to release on September 22, 2010 (Which adds a motion menu specialized for Kinect).
And the last dashboard update(Which allowed the users to use up to two USB flash drives in their xbox 360 console) was also released a while ago. Then Which update are you talking about? πŸ˜•

  13. @sng425

I was updating via online and I was recalling a past experience I should say. πŸ˜› πŸ˜† Plus, those are major updates that Microsoft usually release once a year. I’m pretty sure there are smaller updates in-between.

And I always sign in to Xbox Live and there are occasional updates. Anyway, in the middle of downloading the update at around 50% the electricity went out. I was so scared. When the electricity came back on I turned on the 360 and got the usual message that I needed to update or I’d be signed out of Xbox Live. So, I hit update and it begins where it left off. I was using the NXE dashboard when updating. But I should mention, it was downloading the update and NOT installing. If the electricity went out in the middle of installing the update, I think I’d be a goner.

Got it ❗ Thanks for replying !

Hey bro, you can now upgrade to 3.41. Sony has fixed the issues. More @ http://www.gamersworldbd.com/2010/08/sony-releases-updated-firmware-3-41-fixes-hdd-issues.html

Let me know if it lets you update. Btw… did you swap out your PS3 HDD for a new one?

  16. @sng425

“Yeah, And then it has the infamous β€œrrod”(Red ring of death) too !”
πŸ˜† i like your humor man

    @The Gaming Wiz

I had a load shedding when i was downloading a patch in ps3 but when the electricity came back it started from the beginning unlike the xbox 360 πŸ™

You can always resume downloads in an xbox 360, It can be either an update or even any file(I.e Dlcs, Demos, Videos etc.) that you’re downloading. Don’t know about the PS3 though, Since I’ve never gone online from my PS3 due to some ISP releated issues.

Bro, I already read that post and its good to know that Sony has fixed the problem.

“Let me know if it lets you update. Btw… did you swap out your PS3 HDD for a new one?”

No, I haven’t. But I’ve already started downloading the new firmware on my pc. The file’s size is around 168 Mb and its almost half-way done. I’ll let you know if I face any problems or difficulties during the update process.

  19. @sng425

Keep me posted! And what games are you currently playing on your PS3? I’m playing FF XIII, POP: Sands of Time (last boss) and I am ashamed to admit, inFamous (my friend got me hooked into this, didn’t play when it was originally released)

  20. @The Gaming Wiz/Mushfiqur Rahman

Bro, When did POP: Sands of time released on PS3? πŸ˜• AFAIK, POP: Sands of time was released on PC, PS2, Xbox, Gamecube and Gameboy Advance.

Anyway, I’m currently playing FF XIII, inFamous(I’m also playing it right now since I didn’t had a PS3 at the time when it was originally released), Uncharted : Drake’s Fortune and Yakuza 3.

However, I don’t play that much on my ps3 as much as I do on my PC or Xbox 360. And I’ve only bought my PS3 a few months ago, So I haven’t played a lot of great titles like God of War 3, Uncharted 2 : Among Thieves, Heavy Rain and even MGS 4 on my PS3. But I’m about to get all of them since I haven’t played them yet.

By the way, You can always visit my profile homepage at gamespot to see what games I’m plying right now – http://www.gamespot.com/users/sng425/

  21. @sng425

*Slaps himself on the forehead* D’oh. Sorry. POP: Forgotten Sands not Sands of Time. LOL, get the two names mixed up.

Anyway, yeah, I haven’t played MGS4 yet. Gotta finish MGS3 first. Anyway, UC2 and Heavy Rain is a must play. And speaking of GoW 3, I could go on and on

  22. @The Gaming Wiz

Bro,i have completed MGS 3 & 4 also uncharted 2 didnt play one cuz didnt had ps3 at that time.Still to play heavy rain and god of war 3.

“*Slaps himself on the forehead* D’oh. Sorry. POP: Forgotten Sands not Sands of Time. LOL, get the two names mixed up.”

Oh, Its the Forgotten sands then, I thought its the sands of time(And thats why I got so surprised!)…

But let me tell you one thing bro, Either way, you really had me there for a while ! πŸ˜†

By the way, AFAIK, POP: Forgotten sands is a multiplatform game and has relesed on other platforms too(i.e Xbox 360, PC), Then why are you playing the game on the ps3, bro?

I got mine for the xbox 360 and already finished it.

  25. “inFamous(I’m also playing it right now since I didn’t had a PS3 at the time when it was originally released)”

    – πŸ˜› Didn’t Have*

  26. @The Gaming Wiz/Mushfiqur Rahman

Bro, I’ve already upgraded my PS3’s firmware to the new one(3.41). Its good to see that they have bred some good new features into the new firmware. Since I was using the old firmware(3.21) all these days, I was really quite subtle about these new features. But now it seems like I should have upgraded my PS3’s firmware at that time when all of them were releasing individually one by one, Instead of upgrading all of them at once by upgrading directly to the 3.41.
