Analyst Says PlayStation Phone Could Hurt Sony

Games Inverstor analyst, Nick Gibson in an interview with TechRadar said that the seemingly imminent launch of PS Phone could actually damage the famous PlayStation brand.

Gibson questioned whether the PlaySation Phone can actually be beneficial to Sony Computer Entertainment. “With PSP2 SDKs currently being deployed to developers and PSP still selling at surprisingly robust levels (given the minuscule size of ongoing PSP software sales), the PlayStation Phone concept is something of an enigma,” he said.

“Where and how will it fit into the PlayStation family of products? Whilst a PlayStation branded game phone might make commercial sense to Sony Ericsson, SCE’s approach to hardware is radically different and there are numerous scenarios where such a product could do more harm than good.”

Sony Ericsson is nevertheless aiming for a  February 2011 launch. We previously reported that the off-contract price of the handset could be in the region of $500, with the purchase including five free games. Games will likely be priced like mobile titles and not downloadable PSP ones, meaning under $10.

  1. Remember Nokia’s Ngage, the phone that made calls and played games? Remember how big a flop it was? With the upcoming PSP2 and the already awesome SonyEricsson mobiles (got my eye on that Xperia X10), where does Sony intend to put the PlayStation Phone?
