Cliff Bleszinski: “First Gears Of War Was A Perfect Storm For Failure”

Gears of War is the third best selling franchise on the Xbox 360. However, Gears lead designer Cliff Bleszinski said that if you read what the first Gears of War looked like on paper, you’d see it was a perfect storm for failure.

What Gears of War ended up becoming, is not at all what Epic Games had in mind. But they’re completely satisfied how it all turned out.

“Looking back now, if you look at the first game on paper, it’s the perfect storm for failure,” said Bleszinski in an interview with the latest EGM publication. “You have Epic and Scion merging, you have a new version of the Unreal Engine, we’d never done a game on the 360, we hadn’t a single player game since the first Unreal, we’d never done a third person game… the list goes on and on.”

After asking the question of what happened to himself, Cliff Blezinski went back in time. “I go back to that movie Gattaca, which is one of my favorite sci-fi movies. The brother should have failed because he was genetically inferior, but there’s no gene for the human spirit. We all believed in what we were doing,” he uttered.
