Shift Devoleper Says GT5 Has Too Many Cars

A very controversial opinion indeed. Marcus Nilssen, executive producer of EA’s Shift 2: Unleashed said that Gran Turismo 5 has TOO many cars.

In an interview with VideoGamer, Nilssen said, “I think it’s ridiculous, I do. How many of the millions of people who will buy GT5 are going to experience all those cars? None!”

“I don’t think people are interested in driving a Polo 1.4, 1.6, 1.8 – if that would be in such a game, I don’t know. I think that people want to drive the original cars that are out there, and those are the cars that we’re building: everything from the car-porn cars that you see in the street – the Porsches, the Maseratis – to the race monsters that race around Spa or Monza. It basically caters to all those consumers.”

Gran Turismo 5 contains a massive 1031 cars. Despite all of his criticisms, Nilssen admitted his respect for his Polyphony Digital rival:

“We’re competing on the same turf. I would be foolish not to be concerned about GT5. GT5 is a beast. It’s hard to understand what you should be worried about – it’s so big and they have so many features.”

Another huge competitor for GT5 and Shift2 is Forza 4, likely to release in late 2011. But right now Nilssen is very optimistic that Shift 2 will beat Turn10’s current racer, Forza 3.

“I fundamentally think that if you look at Forza 3 and you look at Shift 2, they’re not in the same division. Shift 2 is just so far ahead.”

Nilsson also added that Shift 2 will feature around a 130 cars, almost EIGHT times less than GT5’s.

  1. Just because NFS Shift 2 doesn’t have as many cars as GT5 (and just because you can’t spend enough time making the number of cars in GT5) doesn’t give you the right to nit-pick at GT5. That’s low on you EA! 🙄
