PS2’s 10 Year Life Cycle Makes Sense Now – Here’s Why

I must admit, I’m not a great Sony fan (yikes!), I never played MGS, God of War or Final Fantasy for that matter. But yes, I had the PS2 even before Microsoft rolled its Xbox. Back then I was more of a PC nut, overclocking, modding and upgrading my PC constantly. As such my PS2 continued to gather dust while I enjoyed the openness of PC gaming.

But now I’ve garnered a certain itch, enjoying the frantic fast paced combat in God of War I & II, delving deeper into the Final Fantasy universe and can’t get enough MGS action. I’ll probably get a PS3 (I’m down to my second 360 by now), but I’m glad Sony stuck true to its word and still support the PS2. 7 reasons why:

1. Great library of games, this is probably a no brainer. With 1800+ titles and of course, there’s MGS, God of War, Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, Jak and Ratchet & Clank. Although the PS3 is backwards compatible [Ed- the news ones aren’t anymore] with a great number of titles, but not everyone’s willing to shell out for the PS3 just to play previous gen titles.

2. Reliability. The PS3 PS2 has a great shelf life, I plugged it back in after 3 years and still works like a charm. Sadly, my 360 RROD’d just after a year.

3. Console is still sold in stores, unlike the Xbox. You can’t find brand new Xbox games but almost every GameStop has a PS2 section. New games are still being released for the PS2.

4. Works great as a DVD player and the slim models take up less space than many DVD players. It fits nicely in the living room.

5. Graphics has aged gracefully, I’m surprised how good old gen games look, especially on a standard def TV. But I can’t say the same with a HDTV, it appears washed out and fuzzy.

PS2 Console

6. Free online play. The PS2 had it and so does the PS3. Being able to play SOCOM II is still a blast, especially with no monthly or yearly fees.

7. Price point. At 100 bucks it’s even cheaper than the Wii, sans the motion controls. This is great for casual gamers before they “graduate” to a 360 or PS3.

This list is by no means exhaustive. Share your thoughts below, why you still love your PS2.

  1. typo. in #2, you say ps3 when you probably mean ps2.

  2. Clearly where u overclocking your CPU before Year 2003? Can u pls tell me which mobo and cooler u where using? You got to be kidding

  3. Jeeez. You should double check articles before You post them, this one if full of errors :/

  4. PS3 hasn’t been backwards compatible for some time now. D:

“The PS3 has a great shelf life, I plugged it back in after 3 years and still works like a charm. Sadly, my 360 RROD’d just after a year.”

Do you mean your PS2? You earlier mentioned that you don’t have a PS3…

  5. @ xu & Annon

Whoops… 😳 Thnx for pointing that out

    @Darkterror

You must’ve mistaken me. By “back then” I meant during the life cycle of the PS2. I’ve been overclocking for about 3 years now.

  6. “Although the PS3 is backwards compatible”? Might wanna check your facts on that one…

  7. DarkTerror – overclocking is nothing new.

I had an overclocked 486DX (look it up)

over ten years ago, way over to be more precise.

  8. My PS3 is backwards compatable (the early models are), so he is not completely wrong. And 360 fan boys no need to get hissy, he’s talking about the PS2 not the PS3 so don’t go starting a flame war. I don’t use mine all to often anymore, almost never now that i got that memory card converter thing so i can port my save files to the PS3 (no more bringing out the PS2 just to impress friends with my pro evo 6 highlights)

  9. eh, tom I have a ps2 memory card port converter cant seem to regester on my ps3.. like to play all my ps2’s game on my 60gb ps3 can you or anyone help??? what do I suppose to do??

  10. Hey ps2fan the card reader will not read in a PS2 game, you have to copy the data to an internal virtual PS2 memory card and then the games will recognize the game saves.

  11. The problem with the 10 year life cycle statement is that it was not given out to releave consumers it was to say to developers that our console will make your software profitable for 10years which it does not. How many 3rd party triple A titles came out in 2008 for the PS2?

  12. I still have my PS2 and even though i have the earliest PS3 ( that is backwards compatible ) i still enjoy playing the Madden series games on it. I also am a proud 360 owner.

  14. my ps3 is backwards compatible, yeah they stopped makin em but its not that bad of a mistake, theres still plenty of backwards ps3s out there so hop off damn

  15. well no i suck for people that own new ps3 because it does not play the ps2 game that suck who want to take out there old ps2 that it work some time… i have ps3 and 360 …..

  16. how about u “graduate” to pc gaming ?

  17. i challenge anyone to find a prebuilt or build a pc for $299.99 plus tax that delivers the same experience a ps3 can right out of the box.

  18. …what kind of new games are still being released for the PS2? The games that I see “new” are the games that are for everything with a screen! the kinds of titles that are on PS2, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360, DS, PSP… and the PS2 has obvious graphical downgrades from most other systems… so are there REALLY any good new games coming out for the PS2?

  19. SILENT HILL SHATTERED MEMORIES YOU A**HOLE EVEN BEING A PORT

  20. @Alex Well the playstation 2 still seems to be a cash cow for sony & sony said will support it as long as it’s in demand.Playstation 2 is a snap to make games for and developers could pump out alot of games in a year on playstation 2 & make alot of easy cash also.

  21. PS2 does have an incredibly long long life. bought it 6 years ago and still works fine!
