2010 Fifa World Cup South Africa Review

This is a review by fellow Gamersworldbd reader Nazmul Hasan Rabbi and has been edited by me.

2010 Fifa World Cup South Africa is the official video game of the Fifa world cup 2010 published by EA Sports and released in April 27th 2010 for the Playstation 3, XBOX 360, Nintendo Wii & Playstation Portable.

The game includes 199 international teams of the 204 that took part in the qualifying campaign including our nation’s football team Bangladesh.

Gameplay:

EA’s next-gen Fifa engine boasts some hell of a physics and [life-like] gameplay mechanics. The gameplay hasn’t been tweaked that much from its predecessor Fifa 10. But a new penalty kick system is one of the two notable new arrivals of this game along with some minor gameplay tweaks.

The new penalty kick system comprises of the tension, the atmosphere, the build up and also the composure. A meter with a moving needle is the answer which contains three zones green orange and red. Green is the perfect zone to orange and red zones where players get caught up. Triggering is the way to control the shot and the direction depends on the time you hold or give the directing using the left analog stick.

Other features in the penalty include a stutter step during the run up, where the direction of the shot can be altered during the run up. Players need good composure to perform penalties well so I recommend practicing penalties in the practice mode before getting into mainstream.

Elements such as home ground advantage are also present and are an important factor when playing the world cup qualifiers. The stadiums of the world cup are in higher altitudes and the other major gameplay enhancement includes high fatigue rate when playing in this stadiums and is a very good addition to recreate the excitement of the world cup.

The game includes a Fifa world cup mode where the qualification and the world cup finals campaign can be played. The game also packs a mode called Captain Your Country mode similar to Be a Pro mode found in earlier Fifa games.

Controls:

There are four kinds of control setups included in the game. Two are preset setups and the others are a customizable setup and a 2 button system.

The two presets include one classic control setup related to the Fifa games we played over the years with few tweaks. The other preset control setup dubbed as new is similar to the default control setup found in the Pro Evolution Soccer series games.

The last option known as customizable option [let’s you do exactly as suggested so you can tailor the controls to your] personal preference. I think it’s a very good addition to the game.

The last control setup includes a two button control setup preferred for beginners who are playing their first dose of Fifa. The two button setup uses the X button for pass and the O button for shoot and an optional R2 button for sprint function. All the control setups make the game [more accessible to all sorts of players].

During gameplay the control seems really [responsive] and delivers a fluid gameplay. Don’t expect the same in online multiplayer matches as small lag can ruin your game. Your game speed won’t be hampered but your controls will be unresponsive or there will be a delay in your desired action during matches.

Visuals and sound:

With the licensed official Fifa hud and enthralling atmosphere the game looks too good to be true. All aspects of a football game come to life in this virtual world. It’s not just about the players on the pitch.

There are captivated crowd in facepaint and crazy apparels to the proactive managers . Not to mention the referees [objecting to your questionable tackles]. [ All this help bring the world cup experience right onto your game console] . These Broadcast “moments” add flair to the game but it can be turned off from the options menu if you prefer.

The two new commentators Clive Tyldsey & Andy Townsend in the matches does the trick and takes the in game commentary to an all new level. Clive and Andy’s call names are done with absolute precision and seems like a live commentary rather than recorded voice without any co-ordination like its predecessor. They also do some debates during their commentary, provide tips for the manager like their real life counterparts which spice up the game. Don’t expect the commentators to be 100% precise all the time but out of my experience it’s 95% precise and is way more spot-on than its predecessors.

During matches the sound that accompany in background of the commentary do back it up. Just imagine as a shot is blasted past the goalkeeper at the top corner or hits ad boards behind the net instead. These sound really crispy and absolutely matches the real game. Don’t forget the special distinctive cheers from supporters and blaring trumpets as they cheer on their nation which light up the game for an enthralling adventure.

Summary:

2010 Fifa World Cup South Africa does a good job of recreating the world cup in the virtual environment and with some pretty good additions which make this game worthwhile. And with few cons on the go, the prs make it simply negligible. For the passionate Fifa fan this game should be a cracker.

Pros (+)

• Fluid gameplay with a lot of depth
• High definition graphics & physics
• Superb commentary and sound effects
• Intuitive control scheme

• Occasional hiccups when browsing through menus and in game replays

• Small lag in online multiplayer modes can ruin your game

Nice review there bro. Which team are you rooting for? I’m Argentina 😀

  2. @ The Gaming Wiz

I am rooting for england but is kinda tensed of their performances in the first two matches hope it changes in the last one .

    @ everyone

I hope that everyone will like my review.

  3. Yah im also rooting for England.
    Hope they crush Slovenia

  4. Nice FIFA WC review man!

But i personally think the physics when compared with Fifa WC SA are way different from FIFA 10 (xbox 360 versions). They are using a modified physics engine to incorporate a totally different shooting mechanism. The finesse shots (RB) and lob shots (LB) are more pressure sensitive and finesse works only with selective players as well needs deadly precision to pull off.

The loading screens and menus are also missing the ARENA from Fifa 10.

“The loading screens and menus are also missing the ARENA from Fifa 10”

You know its my very first review 😳 and i have completely missed the loading screen arena point my bad but still the arena is available inside the game modes like the world cup mode, etc which pops out before the match.

  6. @Rabbi

The review was nice ! It almost pointed out every bit of 2010 Fifa WC SA except some minor issues & points(e.g loading screen arena), But I can understand, This was your very first review of any game and I also did the same thing on my AC 2 review since it was also my first review.
In overall, The review’s “Awesome”. Congrats for showing an excellent presentation on your very first review, bro !

    – Exactly, I also felt the same thing while playing it.

  10. Every1 is argentina and Brazil.*sigh*

  11. absolutely shell shocked for how England lost…..
    :S
I wont see any other Fifa World Cup 2010 matches from now on…..
    🙁

  12. @Rabbi

Just got off the TV. Shocking. Still the score should have been 4-2. The second English goal should have been given. Anyway, can’t wait for Argentina’s match tonight at 12:20! 😛

  13. i still cant get over it i mean come on…Why didnt England foul n receive a yellow card when Germany counter attacked …lampard was rejected 3rd German goal was an off side ..
    what else

  14. @ The Gaming Wiz & xlivnt

actually England didnt had the luck today and were very poor defensively. You were right [xlivnt] they should have challenged German players during their counter attacks. The referees and officials decision making has been poor through out the tournament. If lampard’s equalizing goal was given the events of the match could have been different.Anyway we wont be seeing the english golden boys the gerrards, lampards or the terry’s in the next world cup in 2014 at brazil 😥 As usual we must move on and see what the future has in stores for us.Anyway switching my focus out of world cup to club football [Manchester United] after a short hiatus 😎 Hope that Argentina isn’t as ill fated as England was 😥

  15. @Rabbi

Bro, I’m just totally shocked about today’s match of England against Germany, 😯 I still can’t believe that England is out of the tournament… 👿 🙁 😥
I just hope that whatever happened to England today, Will not happen to Argentina in today’s match @12:20.

  16. @ sng425

thats what i am hoping for Argentina going through to the last 8 🙂
still i am in a angry mood as England lost as i cant even believe what i have witnessed 😯

  17. @Rabbi
yes seriously we are gonna miss Gerrard, Lampard , Beckham , Terry and James…

  18. @ xlivnt

we are gonna see new crop of stars in the next world cup but Euro 2012 can be the last big tournament for this golden stars.Dont worry about Rooney he is young enough to play upto the 2018 world cup .I wont see the Argentina match or anyother world cup match after the last one even the final. As i cant take it anymore.

  19. @Rabbi-
Hopefully we’ll get young stars like Germans got. I really hope they don’t screw us up next time around.
Well Gerrard might be in the next WC cause he just turned 30 at 30th may. So he has a chance so does terry cause he’s 29. But I guess for Lampard euro 12 is final cause he is 32. Man did Lampard had a good match.
Yes now I hope Brazil is eliminated.
Well do try to watch the WC matches cuz it along cums once in 4 yrs.

  20. @ xlivnt

yeah i hope so.James Milner was the only one on this world cup.I am mostly disappointed about the fact that Rooney didnt deliver and with sky high the pre tournament hype he has got he was a certain flop in south africa unlike in the premier and champions league.Dont forget about Beckham the best creative midfielder of this golden generation. He will certainly miss out on the next world cup.

  21. @The Gaming Wiz

the good news is pc version of fifa 11 is nex gen like the console versions but its stripped of the new features ea is gonna introduce in fifa 11 like pro passing and personality plus. The reviewers in ign said its a mix up fifa 10 and the world cup but will always stay behind the console counterparts in terms of gameplay for being stripped of the main two features of this year 👿
