“Kinect Not For Hardcore Gamers”, says BBC Tech

Got your hopes up for Kinect (formerly named Project Natal)? We too want to play Gears of War 3 while flailing our arms around to get Marcus to cover. But hold it just right there.

Rory Jones of BBC Technology has spent half an hour with Kinect, but “was not quite convinced that Microsoft’s technology would deliver for hard-core gamers.”

He further said that motion tracking capabilities of Microsoft’s Kinect was a bit imprecise, “It seemed to work well on fun Wii-like games where you didn’t need too much precision – I’m not so sure how whether it would deliver on a first-person shooter.”

While it’s too early to come to a conclusion. As developers get more familiar with the workings of Kinect, the games will only get better and more responsive.

However, Rory Jones has said that Sony’s Move is more precise for the fact that it still uses a controller in each hand.

“I’ve had a go on Sony’s Move motion control system, which is unveiled on Tuesday. Sony’s solution is much less radical. It has retained the controller, now adorned with glowing spheres which interact with a sensor unit on the television.

This makes the whole experience less physical than with Kinect, but it also delivers a lot more precision. Sony showed us a table tennis game which seemed to mimic the real thing much more closely than I have seen elsewhere.”

What’s more: During a hands-on of Kinect by Eurogamer, the site reported lag on Kinect Sports, developed by Rare.

  1. Sony is getting the upperhand it seems.

  2. PS3 exclusive game “Heavy Rain” getting move support and will be availble later this year.

Yep, you can read the full list at http://www.gamersworldbd.com/2010/06/full-list-of-games-supporting-move.html

You know, Heavy Rain seems the kind of game best supported for motion controls as it’s an interactive drama and doesn’t require precision.

    Thanks!

Had high hopes for Kinect rather than Playstation Move but now it seems Move is the better counterpart of Kinect.Whatever we imagined before like playing gears of war 3 using Kinect should be the prospect of next generation but not the current one.Anyway its odd to see slim being released very shortly after e3 and also for the same price and replacing the current models too how interesting .I think Microsoft is working on a new console so they are trying to kill the rrod and maybe this is the final revision of xbox 360 along with the final 1 and 1/2 peak years for this console. We may see the successor of Xbox 360 as soon as E3 2011.

Ah bro, sad thing is I too had high hopes for Kinect. It has just launched and it will obviously get better. I’m still keeping my hopes up. On a lighter note, I really enjoyed watching Kinect Adventures in action at Microsoft’s press conference. Maybe I’ll get it but first I need to be sure whether there will be lag issues as stated. 🙁

  7. HA HA  who’s laughing now..?Kinect outsold move by 5 to 1…
